The ancients noted that there is a shift in the quality of the cosmic energies in a fixed cyclic manner which corresponds to the nature of the seven graha of the solar system and based upon this knowledge they named the days of the week.
The period of one day and one night is called ahoratra. During ahoratra there is a subtle change in the quality of the cosmic energy which happens 24 times. Each of these 24 spans of Time is called a Hora – or Hour in English – and is governed by one of the seven graha of Jyotish Shastra.
Each hora is known by the name of its ruling graha and following the properties of that graha the Hora supports some types of human activities. From here is born the concept of Hora Muhurt which can be very effectively used to achieve success.
For example, the Surya Hora is suitable for government-related activities, the Chandra Hora is suitable for matters which require emotional maturity, the Mangal Hora is suitable for filing a lawsuit, the Budh Hora is suitable for all activities relating to communication and Public Relationships, the Brihaspai Hora is suitable for opening a Bank Account, Shukra Hora is suitable for matters of money and beauty and the Shani Hora is suitable for all activities of a permanent nature.
Similarly, each Hora is an auspicious time for wearing a gemstone of its ruling graha
The Hora changes in accordance with the time taken by a graha to circumambulate the earth. The longest time to circumambulate the earth is taken by Shani, followed by Brihaspati, Mangal, Surya, Shukra, Budh and Chandra. The sequence has been tabulated below by me:

Below I have tabulated the favourable activities which one may initiate during the period of a Hora. I have also mentioned the unfavourable activities for a particular Hora. Kindly note that the span of the Hora is to initiate the work, one does not have to finish it within the span of the Hora.
I have also mentioned the unfavourable directions for each Hora. Initiating a journey in that direction or work which relates to those directions should be avoided.
